NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVTITY, Bahrain -- Recently, The Marine Forces Central Command Forward season in the Naval Support Activity Bahrain American and National Softball Leagues came to an end.
In the American League, the MARCENT FWD team placed second after a nail-biting championship game, losing to the NSA Bahrain Invaders, 19-18.
In the National League, MARCENT FWD made it to the championship tournament and were soundly defeated by the NSA Bahrain Hitmen in the semifinals, 14-2.
This season served as more than just a sport for the command. It built camaraderie according to Scott Achtemeier, combat cameraman and third baseman.
“It was fun. We had a good season and will do better next time,” he said. “Even though we did not win, it brought us together as a unit.”
According to Roger May, this season experience was disappointing, but he agreed the season did serve its purpose in providing fun and increasing morale within the unit.
“I thought it was fun for the American and Nationals as well,” he said. “I was disappointed the way we lost the National League semi finals game, but I’m looking forward to the next season for the Captain’s Cup.”
Unlike other leagues, in the Captain’s Cup commands put together teams together with all players from within the command.
With increased morale, new found camaraderie and experience, MARCENT FWD charged into the new season with a 17-0 shut-out of the Mine Countermeasures Crew Exultant aboard the USS Dextrous, here, Sept. 9.
The next game is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. against 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
